pH, pOH and Indicators
What is pH?
pH is the potential of hydrogen
What is pOH?
pOH is the potential of hydroxide
What is the pH Scale?
The pH scale measures how acidic or basic a substance is based on the amount of hydrogen ions it possesses (Look at picture above)
What is the pOH Scale?
The pH scale measures how acidic or basic a substance is based on the amount of hydroxide ions it possesses
How Are the Scales Measured?
Both scales are measured from 0-14. The number given to a substance signifies how strong a base or acid is. Have a look below to see their differences:
pH Scale: pOH Scale:
1-3 = Strong Acid 1-3 = Strong Base
4-6 = Weak Acid 4-6 = Weak Base
7 = Neutral 7 = Neutral
8-10 = Weak Base 8-10 = Weak Acid
11-14 = Strong Base 11-14 = Strong Acid

- On the pH scale, the closer to 1 a substance is, the more acidic it is. The closer to 14 a substance is, the more basic it is and 7 is considered neutral.

What Is An Indicator?
An indicator is an easy way to tell whether a substance is an acid or base. There are a multitude of different indicators, but below are a few popular examples.
